The high school was bustling with excitement that warm spring day. Freshmen orientation was over but Aimi had missed it. She stayed back with Kyo and Uo in the classroom, chatting and successfully cheering them up. The pollen outside was really bothering Uo and Kyo was being taciturn today. So she made jokes and wouldn’t leave off until they smiled.
This is my purpose; to bring joy to my friends’ lives. Just seeing their happiness is enough to fill my own heart with joy, she thought.
Tohru soon returned and left again with Kyo to retrieve his Sohma cousins for everyone to meet. As soon as they left the room, Hana approached Aimi, her face creased in a frown. “What is it about you, Aimi-chan? Your aura is so strange. So… different.”
Aimi was taken aback by her direct question. Hanajima and she were rarely alone together, even now Uo was here but purposefully looking away, pretending to ignore them. Had she been waiting to ask her this question for some time?
“Uh, well, I’m just different, is all. The Sohmas have a different feel to them too, right?”
Hana narrowed her eyes in suspicion. “They do but how would you know?”
“I can kind of read people too.” That was an understatement. Aimi’s gift allowed her to see a lot about living creatures, more than others could. She could tap into the psyche of animals, plants and humans alike. It wasn’t really mind reading so much as understanding their emotional plights. Touching a small part of their souls. It was an impossible thing to explain in words and she knew Hana wouldn’t understand. The dark haired girl’s insights were completely different than Aimi’s.
“Hmm,” Hana looked thoughtful for a moment before finally grinning at Aimi. “I guess we all have our special talents.”
Aimi grinned back but her mood was now ruined. She didn’t like that Hana knew something was up with her. If she suspected her “gift” and spread rumors, Aimi would have to deal with it all over again. The looks. The whispers. The name calling. The bullying. She didn’t think she would be able to handle that again. But would Hanajima really do such a thing?
When classes were over, Aimi rushed out. She didn’t want to face her friends right now. All day she had been distracted by what Hana had said. She was letting her fears take over again and she had to go somewhere quiet and calm down. She needed to be alone for a while.Aimi went flying around a corner and almost ran into someone skipping their way down the hall. She stopped short, dropping her books in a heap between them. “Oh!” she cried out. “I’m so sorry! I was going too fast.” She dropped to her knees to collect her things. Small hands reached down to help her.
“That’s okay,” a small voice said. “Here, let me.”
Aimi finally looked up to see the person she’d almost run over and her heart stopped in her chest. For a moment she couldn’t breathe.
A small face with delicate features stared back at her. Thick eyelashes framed lovely brown eyes. Short, wavy blonde hair fell into his face, covering the piercings in his ears.
It was a boy. A tiny, beautiful boy who was, for some reason, dressed in a girl’s uniform. He handed her one of her books and beamed at her. In that moment Aimi knew two things for sure.
This was Momiji Sohma and he was cursed by the spirit of the rabbit.
Aimi also knew that after meeting this boy, she was never going to be the same.
“Momiji…kun?” Aimi stuttered. The boy tilted his head to the side, his grin disappearing to be replaced by a look of confusion. “Have we met?”
“Oh, ah, no actually. I’m friends with Yuki and Tohru. They told me you were starting here today. I recognized you from Yuki’s description. I was hoping to meet the other two Sohmas who started today but I certainly didn’t mean to almost knock you down.” Aimi tried a grin but her heart was still beating irregularly. There was something magnetic about this boy. Something drawing her to him. She suddenly wanted to know everything about him.
“Oh, well then,” Momiji hopped up, handing her the rest of her schoolwork. “We should make proper introductions.” He bowed. “Pleased to meet you, I’m Momiji Sohma.”
“I’m Aimi Fujimoto and the pleasure is all mine,” Aimi bowed as low as she could without dropping her books again. When she righted herself, she couldn’t help the smile that crept across her face. She just couldn’t stop looking at him. It was rare for her to be at a loss for words but somehow her brain just wasn’t functioning right. He affected her that much.
“I was just going to look for Tohru and see if she wanted to play. Why don’t we go together?”
Her earlier worries completely forgotten, Aimi readily agreed and they walked side by side back the way she had come. She finally found her voice and asked about his teacher and classmates and how he was liking the school so far. Momiji barely had time to respond before they were joined by Hatsuharu, the other Sohma first year. After introductions, Aimi felt more comfortable. Being alone with Momiji made her very nervous. It was stupid and juvenile but there it was. She couldn’t help it.
They met the others outside for a game of badminton. After introductions, Uo was first to notice how short Momiji was. Surprisingly, no one commented on his apparel. Maybe Tohru had already told them about it.“Wow, you’re a shorty!” Uo said, placing a hand on his head and bringing it straight through the air back to herself, showing that he only came up to her chest. Momiji’s face fell but before he could say anything, Aimi spoke up.
“I was super short for a while, too. Remember, Uo-chan? I told you about how I was picked on for so long because I was so tiny compared to everyone else. But look at me now!” Aimi swung her arms up, showing her full height. "I’m pretty tall now, huh?”
Uo laughed, “That’s true. I almost forgot about that.”
Aimi patted Momiji’s shoulder, the contact sending waves of heat up her arm. “Some people just grow at different rates, right?” She winked at him and he smiled. His smile did strange things to her insides. But she didn’t want to dwell on that.
Okay, she thought, maybe I have a thing for this guy. It doesn’t mean I have to be weird around him. I just need to treat him like everyone else. Right, just become friends and we’ll go from there. Besides, we probably aren’t right for each other. A witch and a cursed boy? A fox and a rabbit? No way would that ever work.
No way.
