“And you’re sure it’s okay?” Aimi asked once again. Shigure just waved a hand at her, smiling his silly, perverted smile.
“Why would I ever say no to a teenage girl spending the night?” He looked pointedly at Aimi’s chest and she laughed. Yuki put a hand to his face in embarrassment. Tohru was completely oblivious. Aimi thought the guy was a hoot.
“You are just too cute, Shigure-san! You better watch out, I might sneak into your room tomorrow night!” She laughed even harder when he actually blushed. Few people could catch him off guard.
“Aimi-chan, you shouldn’t say things like that, you’ll give him ideas…” Yuki groaned.
“Nonsense! He knows I’m just teasing, don’t you Shigure-san?” Aimi winked at him. She enjoyed the constant banter in this house and was happy to add to it. She had stopped in for a visit after school to ask about staying over the next night and fell in love with the house immediately. The place smelled of Tohru and warmth and… home. Aimi felt so comfortable here it was ridiculous. And watching Yuki and Kyo argue outside of school was amusing.
Shigure seemed a nice enough guy, though he was also cursed. She did get the sense that he had some secrets of his own, besides turning into a dog, that he was keeping from his fellow housemates. She had no idea what but he struck her as being just as crafty as her when it came to making sure such secrets kept hidden. Speaking of crafty…
“Do you realize what they call you at school now, Aimi-chan?” Tohru asked.Aimi tried not to flinch. She had been called plenty of names at school in the past, none of which had been pleasant. But Tohru was smiling in amusement so it couldn’t be bad.
“Oh?”
“They call you the fox!” Tohru exclaimed.
Aimi couldn’t help but to laugh. “Why would they call me that?”
“I guess because you are so smart and good with people!” Tohru said.
Yuki shook his head. “That isn’t the reason I heard.”
“Oh? Is it because she’s so pretty?” Shigure joked. Yuki’s blush gave him away. That was exactly what he’d heard! Aimi just shook her head. She might have large breasts and a generous bottom but it didn’t mean she was pretty. She thought she was rather plain, actually. If not for her coloration and hourglass shape, she would hardly be noticed at all.
She couldn’t deny the irony of it though. That she would adopt such a nickname when she was surrounded by the spirits of real animals! Good thing the fox wasn’t part of the Zodiac, she thought.
“But she is very clever!” Tohru cried, trying to get her point across. “She makes such good grades in math and plays the piano so well. I hear you sing well too, Aimi-chan.”“Oh? Maybe you can sing for us sometime,” Shigure said.
“Eh, maybe. Well, I better get going!” Aimi jumped up, beaming at them, then grabbed her books and headed for the door.
“Wait, let me walk you home!” Yuki offered.
“I should be fine. I’m a big girl.”
“Still,” Yuki held up a hand, “I insist. It isn’t safe for girls your age to walk alone in the late afternoon. It might be dark before we get there.”
Aimi just shrugged and let Yuki follow her as they collected their shoes. She was sure to walk around and wave goodbye to her orange-haired friend who was practicing martial arts in the yard. “See you tomorrow, Kyo-kun!”
He didn’t say a word or even turn her way but he did throw a hand up in farewell and she grinned. “Baka neko,” Yuki muttered to himself. But Aimi heard him and giggled. “No, he’s a nice guy. You are too, Yuki-kun.”
Yuki seemed surprised at her words but gave her a warm smile. “So your father is going out of town? Does he go on trips often?”
“Oh no, he rarely leaves me. His art is pretty famous though so he’s always hearing from people about it. He’s supposed to give a speech at some conference tomorrow night. I wonder if he’s nervous about it.”
“If he’s anything like you, he’ll do fine,” Yuki smirked. Aimi was never nervous when she had to speak in front of the class. She was confident and very sure of her subject. She was quickly becoming one the teacher’s favorite students.
She chuckled as they walked. “Oh no! He’s very shy and reserved. We’re like opposites when it comes to that.”
“You must get that from your mother then,” Yuki said.
Aimi’s smile dimmed. “I suppose so.” Her downcast eyes had Yuki dropping the subject quickly. This was obviously a touchy subject for her. They were silent the rest of the walk and when they reached her door, Aimi turned her million-watt smile on him again.
“Thanks for playing the perfect gentleman and walking me home. I’ll see you at school tomorrow. Have a safe walk back.” She turned to enter the house but he caught her sleeve, surprising her. When she faced him again, his eyes were solemn and dark.
“Aimi, if you ever need to talk about something, you can come to me. I won’t judge or anything.”
His words surprised her but she recovered quickly enough. “I wouldn’t burden you with my issues, Yuki-kun. You have enough of your own that you certainly aren’t sharing.” And with that, she rushed inside and closed the door. Yuki was left alone, his mouth slightly open at the implications of what she’d said.
The next day at school, Aimi acted as if the conversation she and Yuki had the night before never happened. He was willing to play along for the time being. Once classes let out, Tohru had to go to work at her job and though Yuki usually walked her there and back, Aimi asked him if he wouldn’t mind walking her home to retrieve her things for staying over. He agreed and Kyo stepped up and offered to walk Tohru instead. It all worked out nicely and soon they were on their way.
Again, Yuki and Aimi walked in silence to her house but Aimi seemed content. She began humming a tune to herself and skipping along the sidewalk. Yuki had been a tad nervous at first, considering last night and the fact that she was a girl walking very close to him, but he soon relaxed and adopted her carefree attitude. “It’ll be spring soon,” he finally spoke as they neared her front door.
“Mmm hmm.”
“It’s Honda-san’s favorite season. She and I like growing things.”
Aimi grinned at him and leaned her head back, gazing at the sky in rapture. “I love all the seasons. They each have their own special magic to bring to the world. Their own special secrets.”
She checked the mail and unlocked her front door, inviting Yuki in. “Pardon the intrusion,” he said, slightly nervous at the idea of being alone with a girl in her home. She’d mentioned that her father had left this morning.“Do come in and make yourself comfortable. I’ll just grab my overnight bag from upstairs,” Aimi called cheerfully as she slipped her shoes off and skipped out of sight. Yuki’s movements were much slower as he took in her home. Entering the living area, he noticed that the furnishings were simple and plain, much like his own home with Shigure. Peeping his head into the kitchen, he observed that it was immaculate. Was Aimi the one who kept the house so tidy or was it her father? Before he could explore any more, Aimi came stampeding down the stairs with a bag on her arm, giggly and gleeful. She had changed her outfit, donning a plain, long sleeved dress that was far more modest than what he would expect from the busty girl.
“Ready! I’m excited, how about you?”
“Uh, I suppose. It has been a few months since anyone new has slept over.”
“I’ve never been to a sleepover before!”
Yuki was shocked to hear her say this. Aimi, the overly-friendly, peppy, social flower had never spent the night with friends before? It seemed rather strange. His curiosity about her past was piqued once again.
They retreated to the door, retrieving their shoes. “Oh, I wanted to ask you, Yuki-kun. Would you mind tutoring me a bit in history? It’s the only subject I’m really struggling with and by struggling I mean close to failing. I could pay you a bit if you could come over maybe once a week and help me out,” Aimi said.“I would be happy to help you, free of charge,” Yuki replied with a smile.
“Are you sure? I would be taking you away from your own studies, right? I don’t want to inconvenience you,” she gave him wide eyes as she locked the door behind them.
“Nonsense. You are my friend; I want to help you.”
Aimi beamed and leaned forward to hug him. She remembered herself and froze a half second before he cringed away. Stepping backward, she laughed nervously and rubbed the back of her head. “Ha ha, thanks a lot, Yuki-kun! You’re a real life saver!” Then she started walking away.
Yuki was breathing heavily, still freaking out about the near miss. She had almost hugged him and he hadn’t any time to react! Luckily, she had stopped before she could actually wrap her arms around him. As relieved as he was, he was also surprised. The look on her face when she paused mid-hug. It was as if she knew his secret and was berating herself for forgetting. But she couldn’t possibly know.
Could she?
