Chapter 4: Angel
The king was sitting on a chair on his studio and sleep had taken him. If you looked at his expression you would see a terrible fear forming in his face. No man alive could bring that expression out of him. Only the things he was dreaming of could. Those dreams always could. In those dreams, he was still a child who was being hunted down by the whole world. The king began to sweat and tremble in his sleep, a trembling so strong that even the chair he was sitting on began to tremble in unison with his body.
Then out of the blue two warm hands came around the king’s body and embraced him so strong that the trembling stopped, and the fear left his face. It is going to be ok - whispered a warm sweet voice in his ear. Doflamingo opened his eyes but didn't move. Mirajane - he said with a slow whisper. I am here - the voice responded.
After a while, the hands retreated from him, and from the darkness came forward a young beautiful woman with long white hair and bright blue eyes. She was the only one that knew about the king's nightmares and the only one who could calm him when he was seeing one of them. Apart from the king being a prick in nature, the true reason he didn't stay with any woman after he had bedded them was that he didn't want anyone to see him in this state. Crew or no crew, he would kill anyone who would see him like this. Well, anyone apart from the white-haired woman in front of him. The woman's name was Mirajane Strauss, and she was Donquixote Doflamingos second in command. If you knew the king and her as much I do you would wonder to yourself on how is that possible. How could a sweet creature like her be the second in command to this man? Let just say that even angels sometimes like the company of demons.
I brought you some tea - said the white-haired woman as she was filling a cup for him. Doflamingo nodded and then said: Fill one for yourself to and sit. I would like some company right now.
Mirajane was something of a special case even in his crew. She was the first person to join him in his quest so many years ago and between the two of them, there was a connection so deep that is very difficult to explain in simple words. He found her when she was just a child and since then they had been inseparable. After he became king, he passed the title of captain to her as the law demanded. Well, the law demanded that you couldn't be a pirate captain and a king at the same time to be precise but those are just details so let's not dwell on them too much. The passing of the title to her at the end was mostly his way of rewarding her for her service more than him doing what the law demanded. He wasn't someone who cared about laws anyways.
How is the tea? - Mirajane asked with a warm smile. It is quite nice - answered the king quietly. Heard you sent Bacchus and Brandish on a mission. Two of them on the same mission must be a very important one. Not really - answered the blond-haired man on the other side of the desk. It is just a delivery of weapons we are sending to two warring nations. Two warring nations - repeated the white-haired woman. Who are they fighting? Each other of course - said the king as a sly smile formed in his face. Who else? I see - said the young woman with a tone of desperation in her voice. I bet they don't even know that you are supplying them both. Of course, not - said the king with a cheerful tone. Not that that would make any difference. Even though on the surface the king looked like a law-abiding citizen now nothing could be farther away from the truth. He was an underground broker, who dealt with the nastiest things you can imagine. The gods had thought that giving him the title of king would have made him less inclined to do mischief but the only thing that had come from that decision was just make him more influential. Now that he couldn't create commotion openly, he had just created an elusive phantom. Someone that had come from nowhere and had taken the underworld by storm. The elusive Joker!
So - Mirajane began. You sent Brandish away, so she cools down a bit... She smiled when she saw the king raise an eyebrow. Come now - said the white-haired woman cheerfully. I have a brain as well as a sweet face you know. Heh Heh Heh - laughed the king. I guess you do. Why Bacchus though? - continued Mirajane ignoring his mocking tone. Well, that is because Brandish is lazy. Even when there are troubles, she will just be the lazy person that she is and ignore it. Bacchus on the other end has more resolve. So, they will balance each other. Is that good enough of an explanation for you? - concluded the king. Maybe. Still Doffy - said Mirajane. She was the only one who called him that. There is something not right with your story. Really? - said Doflamingo amused. What? Well - she said smiling. You just said that Brandish is lazy even on the sight of trouble, and that is why you sent Bacchus with her. Problem is that there shouldn't be any trouble, to begin with, if they are using our usual routes which they are. Heh Heh Heh - began laughing the king. How perceptive of you my dear. Well, let's just say that there will be trouble. He looked at Mirajane for a moment and continued. You see, it is true that I want Brandish away for a while. Her behaviour...has started to trouble me. That route though wouldn't keep her away enough though. So, I may have let slip a word or two. Mirajane started to sip tea as the king was doing his explaining. It is not enough just to create trouble though - continued the king. Knowing Brandish, she will just take the shortest way out and be done with it. I am not implying that she is incompetent of course. It is that she doesn't like to bother herself with complicated things. That is why I sent Bacchus. To make sure she goes through with it. That should keep her away from here enough for me to clear my thoughts. She loves you; you know - said Mirajane. And that is her first mistake - said the king with a hint of regret on his voice. When he turned to look at Mirajane a cold filled his entire being. The look on her eye was so cold that even the ice would shiver. You do not approve? - he asked. It isn't my place to say anything - responded the white-haired woman. Well, your eyes say otherwise - added the king. They finished their tea in silence after that. When they finished Mirajane just got up and left the room without a word. As soon as Mirajane got out of the king's studio her eyes filled with tears. She began to walk as quickly as possible so when she was about to burst up in tears, she would be away enough for the cruel king to not hear her. If you think that she was crying because of what the king told her about Brandish, think again. She was crying for herself. For herself and for the love she had for the cruel man she had just spent the last hour having tea with. How many years had she kept these feelings deep inside her? For how many more would she keep them still? In a way she was glad. She knew that the man had no heart and didn't know the first thing about love. She was glad that she hadn't expressed her feelings to him. He would have just smiled to her, but deep down in himself, he would have had just mocked her, and her proclamation of love. You cannot speak of love to someone who has only hatred in his heart.
