“Hi,” Kyo frowned fiercely at Aimi. She just blinked at him. Her mind was whirling with questions and she had to give her head a little shake so she could remember to answer him properly. He seemed a bit nervous and shy around her, almost like a young child.
“Hello!” she finally said with a cheerful smile.
In moments, Uotani was calling over another boy. Again, Aimi had that strange feeling. It was the same with this quiet, feminine boy. The same curse.
“If you’re both Sohmas, I must call you by first name, it seems. Pleased to meet you, Yuki-kun!”
Yuki seemed a bit startled at her gleeful exclamation but he gave her a small smile in return. “Pleased to meet you, um…”
“Aimi. Call me Aimi-chan, please!”
“That’s so informal,” Yuki protested but she only shook her wavy locks.
“Of course not, we’re going to be great friends!” And as she said it, she felt the truth of it. Her strange intuition was telling her things about Yuki that had nothing to do with his curse. There was a darkness in him, a hidden pain that she understood all too well…
“Wow, you Sohmas are some good-looking guys!” she said, trying to stay positive. Uotani laughed while Kyo and Yuki managed to look embarrassed.
Soon class started and everyone settled into their seats. The teacher introduced her to the class and she bowed and smiled at everyone. She wasn’t surprised to find most of the guys staring at her. She was well aware that her Western features were appealing to boys their age. It used to make her uncomfortable but now she just shrugged it off. Boys had never really interested her in that way before. Dating was practically a foreign concept.During lunch, Aimi met a few more of the students but she made sure to spend more time with Honda, Uotani, Hanajima, and the Sohmas. They were a fun and interesting lot: arguing, laughing, telling jokes, and having an all-around good time. These were the sort of people she wanted to cling to. The atmosphere here was almost like a drug to her. She craved this kind of socialization. She needed people her age speaking to her comfortably. They made her feel normal. Honestly, if two cursed boys could be treated as normal, why couldn’t she? Before she knew it, the school day was over. She caught up with the group saying their farewells outside the school gates. Hanajima and Uotani went one way, Honda and the Sohmas went the other. Aimi blushed when she realized she could be walking with Tohru-chan for a while after school. Maybe they could meet and walk together in the morning?“Of course!” Honda said, her sweet face lighting up when Aimi suggested it timidly. Aimi had been nervous that the Sohmas would speak up and make excuses but Yuki nodded his agreement. Kyo said nothing but she knew by now that that was just his way. She thought she had him figured out.
As they walked, they spoke of an upcoming test that Honda was nervous about. Aimi wasn’t worried since it was math and that was her best subject. Yuki offered to tutor Honda. Kyo changed the subject by asking about dinner. When Tohru smiled and answered quickly, Aimi immediately realized the implications.
They live together.
Ah, that explained it then. Honda did know about the curse. She was nervous around the boys in school because she feared for them. Aimi said nothing and kept her observations to herself. Outing them would only make things uncomfortable between them and she certainly didn’t want that. Not her first day, when things were going so well.
The days we growing warmer now. Still chilly, yes, but the hint of spring was around the corner. Spring was nice but Aimi hated summer. Hot weather meant bathing suits and hair up in ponytails and too much flesh exposed. Showing her skin was not something she ever looked forward to.
“Which school did you attend before?” Yuki asked. He hadn’t heard about her hospitalization yet and Aimi was loathe to talk about it. She felt her shoulders tense. Her smile became forced and she could tell by his eyes that he knew it. He would recognize such a change. You can’t play a player.“Oh, um, that’s my street! Shall I meet you in the morning here, say, 7:30?”
“Of course! Goodbye, Aimi-chan!” Tohru waved brightly.
“Later,” Kyo mumbled.
“Goodbye,” Yuki said, his eyes never leaving her face. She knew he suspected she was hiding something.
Aren’t we all? she thought.
She dashed down her street to her own house and stepped lightly inside. “Dad, I’m home!” Slipping her shoes off, she entered the house quietly. Calling out her entrance was traditional but she was always careful to be quiet around the house, just in case her father was working. And sure enough, when she walked by his office, he was sitting on his three-legged stool, painting away at the large canvass before him. Aimi meant to pass by quietly, so as not to disturb him and ruin his concentration, but he sensed her presence and turned to face her.Her father’s creased brow relaxed at the sight of her. “Hello, Mi. How was your first day?”
“Great! The school and classroom are nice. The subjects won’t be as hard as I thought. All my late night cramming paid off. I even made some friends!”
“Really? That’s great!”
“I know! I think, I think this place will be nice.” She was almost afraid to say it out loud and jinx it. Things were going so well. Maybe too well. Her uncertain tone had her father’s face darkening a little.
“Everything went okay? There weren’t any… problems?”
Aimi was quick to reassure her father. “No, no problems like that. It went well.”
He laid his paintbrush down, his hands splattered with different colors, and turned to face her fully. The concern in his eyes had her own dropping to the floor.
“You would tell me if there was a problem, wouldn’t you?”
Aimi tried not to sigh out loud and shifted the books in her arms. He asked her this so often lately. A part of her was tired of hearing it. A part of her was glad that he cared so much. And a part of her, well, that was the darkness whispering into her mind. She refused to acknowledge that part of herself. No more.
“Of course I would, dad. Everything is going great so far. I’m going to do my homework so you can get back to work. Later!” And she ran off before he could broach the subject again.
“There are apples in the kitchen!” He called up the stairs after her. She yelled down an acknowledgement and closed the door to her bedroom quietly. She wanted some privacy to mull over everything she’d learned today.
A new school. New people. It was the same old story. Only this time, there were some kids with a strange curse. And a very nice girl who lived with them and knew about it but was keeping their secret for them. It was mysterious and exciting but though Aimi was intrigued, she knew better than to say anything. This was something they struggled with and she would help them by keeping the secret too. It was almost a relief to her, knowing that she wasn’t the only strange one at her school. Maybe she had been right after all. Maybe this time, things would be different.
