“It’s too bad your friends were busy,” Daisuke said.
“Ah, Dad, it’s fine. I’m having fun with just you!” Aimi splashed water in his direction. Her father, not wanting to get his thinning hair wet, leaned away to avoid the spraying moisture.
They played in the inground pool for some time, the trees overhead shading them from the severe sun. Aimi was glad for the shade, her pale skin burned so easily that sunscreen was a must most of the year. She wore her favorite red one-piece bathing suit with a black mesh shirt and skirt. Since it was only her father and her around, she wore nothing over her wrists and the scars were ugly and reddish purple in the water. Aimi tried not to look at them.
“It was nice of your friend to let us stay here,” she said.
Dasiuke shrugged. “He’s never around these days to use it. Every year he speaks of selling, but he’ll probably never let the place goes. It ‘s an old family home.”
Aimi gazed at the house behind them. True, the place was older, but it was well maintained. It was smallish, with only two bedrooms to boast of. However, the living room and dining room were spacious with floor to ceiling windows that gave a perfect view of the backyard. The backyard itself had the pool and many different types of trees and shrubbery adorning the fenced in acre of land. Compared to their tiny backyard at home, this place was a picturesque dreamland.
“Still, it’s nice to have somewhere to get away for a bit. I’m sure you needed a break, too, right?” Aimi asked. One of her goals for the few days she was here was to try and get talking with her dad again. They had been drifting apart over the last year and she didn’t want him to feel like it was his fault. True, he seemed to always be busy with new projects lately, but she wasn’t going out of her way to discuss her life with him like she used to. Things needed to change. She missed her dad.
Daisuke smiled at her as he waded through the shallow end of the pool. “Yes. We both do.” His eyes seemed sad for a moment, but Aimi was having none of that.
“Hey, look what I learned how to do!”
She closed her eyes and concentrated, listening intently to see if they were, in fact, completely alone in this enclosed area. Once she was satisfied, she released some of her gift into her hands. Placing her palms just over the surface of the water, she relaxed and let her special ability whisper to her. As she whispered back, the water began to rise towards her palms and she drew her hands upwards, until there were two thick streams of water rising from the pool. She spoke to the elements, demanding compliance as well as conveying her understanding.
That was the key. Understanding how to coax and give orders on the molecular level. Her gift was given to her by Mother Nature and though most of her life she could never understand why, this last week she had decided it was time to stop fretting about the whys and concentrate more on the hows. Gaining full mastery of this gift would certainly be beneficial when she felt overwhelmed by it. If she could find safer and less noticeable ways to channel it, it would be easier for her to fit in amongst others.
Aimi brought her hands together and manipulated the water until it was shaped like a ball, floating over her hands. Her father watched in wonder. He hadn’t seen her use her gift in quite some time.
“T-that’s amazing!”
Aimi beamed at him. AS the water fell back into the pool with a splash, she wondered how her friends were faring. Were the Soumas and Tohru playing in the ocean today? Was Uo working? Was Hanajima spending time with her parents and little brother? She hoped they were all well.
The next few days, Aimi spent as much time with her father as she could. They went for walks, played in the pool, and she taught him the card game Yuki had taught her. But as time passed, she began to get this uneasy feeling. For some reason, she had the nagging suspicion that something was wrong. Chiding herself for being silly, she ignored it. Until they came home and she saw her friends again and realized her bad feeling had basis.
Seeing Tohru and the Soumas at school again had the feeling washing over her anew. There was something different in the air between them. Tohru especially seemed to have something on her mind, something bothering her. Aimi wasn’t sure if something had happened while they were at the summer house, but the air seemed heavier around Tohru and Kyo. Tohru was easily distracted, sometimes even muttering encouragement to herself. Kyo was subtler, but Aimi noticed that he was always watching Tohru, and the truth of his feelings were laid bare to her.
Does Tohru not notice? She does seem a bit naïve when it comes to that sort of thing. But what in the world is bothering her? Maybe I should just ask her. Maybe not. If it has to do with the Juunishi curse, she won’t be able to tell me and my question will only serve to get her all flustered. Ugh, I hate walking on eggshells.
Yuki, on the other hand, seemed different in a more positive way. It was as if a burden had been lifted from his shoulders. He was busy these days with the student council, but he made sure to take the time and talk to her every day. But she soon found that the parent-teacher conferences had him asking his own nosy questions.
