The sky began to cloud over, going from a light blue to a smoky gray within minutes. Aimi tried to speed up, but the grocery bags were heavy and she didn’t want to chance tripping on the sidewalk and ruining the food.
“This sure blew in fast,” she mumbled to herself. Her words were like a key that unlocked the doors to the rain. A sudden cloudburst had her soaked in seconds. Jogging now, Aimi cut across a park and ran under a gazebo. Shaking her head slightly and sending water droplets flying, she heaved a sigh and wondered how long the rain would last. She watched others running by, grateful that it wasn’t chilly out. A summer cold was the last thing she needed.
Three girls and a boy walked by under umbrellas. Aimi blinked at them for a moment. She recognized them from school. She opened her mouth to hail them before rethinking it. A memory slammed into her and she clamped her mouth closed. The tall girl with the purple umbrella had been one of the people circulating the rumors about her around school. She hadn’t even bothered to be secretive about it, but spoke about Aimi right in the same room, sneering and calling her a weirdo.
Aimi turned away from them as they passed, unable to bring herself to call a greeting. What if the girl laughed at her and told the others about her? She wasn’t about to get bullied here, outside of school on a rainy day. No thanks, she thought.
“Aimi… chan?”
Right before her stood a soaking wet Kisa. Aimi almost yelped in surprise. She hadn’t been there a few minutes ago. How had the girl managed to sneak up on her without her hearing a sound? The floorboards of the gazebo hadn’t even creaked.
“Oh! Hello, Kisa chan. You got caught out in the rain, too?” Aimi studied the girl’s dripping yellow dress that matched her blonde hair. The shy tiger looked so cute with her big eyes blinking up at her.
“Yes, I thought I would hide here, but then I saw it was occupied and I hesitated, but then I saw it was you here so I…” Kisa trailed off and glanced at the backs of the group of teenagers.
“You’re more than welcome to share the shelter with me. It can be our hiding spot.” Aimi smiled brightly but when Kisa brought her eyes away from the others, they held a look of confusion.
“You were going to call out to your friends, but then you didn’t.”
She saw that? Aimi felt her cheeks flush. The quiet ones were always the most observant. “Well,-” Aimi’s smile faltered, -“they aren’t exactly my friends. I mean, I know them from school but-“
“Are you afraid of them?”
Mouth hanging open in surprise, Aimi could only stare at the girl for a minute. Then she set the grocery bags on the wooden floor and leaned against the support beam, one hand lazily rubbing the soft material of her elbow-length gloves.
“I’m not so much afraid as I am wary. One of them has said things about me.”
Kisa’s eyes widened and she took a step closer to Aimi. “Are they bullying you?”
That’s the same word I thought of earlier, bullying. “It hasn’t gotten that far yet.”
Kisa shocked her again by reaching out and taking her hand. The girl’s palm was small but warm, even slick with rain. “I used to get bullied, too. It was really hard for me.”
This made sense to Aimi. It explained why the girl was so quiet and shy. She had been much the same when she was younger and bullied in elementary school. “But things are better now?” Aimi covered Kisa’s hands with hers, giving her an encouraging smile.
“Yes. Yuki and Tohru chan helped me. Yuki understood.”
Aimi’s brow furrowed but she didn’t question the girl’s statement. She couldn’t imagine who would give Yuki a hard time. Everyone adored him at school. “I’m glad. You’re a good kid. Nobody should ever make you feel unhappy. The world should feel blessed when you smile, because it’s a beautiful sight.”
Kisa grinned and Aimi playfully tousled her hair. “If anyone messes with you again, let me know. I’ll show them what’s what!”
That made Kisa giggle and the sound was like tiny bells amidst the noise of the rain beating on the roof. Little Kisa reminded Aimi of herself so much. When she was younger, she had turned her inner sadness outward, showing her pain through silence and averted eyes. It wasn’t until middle school that she finally realized she didn’t have to let someone else’s actions affect her own personality. Aimi was naturally loud and playful, and no amount of bullying could change that.
If only their words still didn’t hurt me so, she thought. If only I was as strong as this girl before me. She grabbed her grocery bags and stepped out into the pouring rain, afraid Kisa might question her further about her own experiences with bullies.
“See you later, Kisa!” Aimi jogged the rest of the way home without a backwards glance.
Once she was dried off and the groceries were put away, Aimi called Tohru. She hoped that she could go and visit her tomorrow or maybe they could meet somewhere. Unfortunately, Tohru had other plans. Momiji was taking the household to one of the Sohma family’s summer homes. Aimi felt a pang of jealousy, but shrugged it off and wished Tohru a good time.
After she hung up, she sat on her bed and wondered what she would do with herself this summer break. Her homework was finished, she had no job, and her friends had their own plans. I can’t just sit around in this house forever. Maybe I could convince Dad to take me to the beach. We could make a day of it.
She stared at the window as the sky began to clear, holding on to the hope that her days would soon brighten.
Not as exciting as previous chapters, but gives you a bit more insight and shows a kinship between Kisa and Aimi.
