The morning after Aimi returned home from the hospital, Yuki thought of stopping by her house to see if she was ready for school yet. He wanted to offer to walk her there. Perhaps this small gesture would help fill the space that had been growing between them over the past few days. Whenever he went to visit her, she would barely speak to him. Though she didn’t seem angry, Aimi was withdrawn, melancholy, and barely noticed he was there. Yuki had the feeling that she knew how to play the system because she managed to get released after only four days in the hospital. She must have convinced the staff that she was no longer suicidal.
Yuki wasn’t so sure if that was true, and he doubted her father would believe it either.
Standing outside her door, hand poised to knock, he froze and stayed in that position as his mind raced. Would she want to go back to school? Was she ready for that? Even if she was, would she want him to walk her? Was she still upset that he had saved her life?
“Don’t tell anyone,” she had said the second day he visited her. “Don’t tell anyone at school about it. Just tell them I have taken ill and had to be out for a while.”
And he was a loyal enough friend to listen to her request. Or was he a fool?
Backing away from the door, he turned with a sigh and headed on without her. He thought about the good times they had all spent together. Hours of fun and laughter, especially between Aimi and Tohru. Where had it gone wrong? And how could he convince her that this world was worth it when he had a hard enough time finding true happiness himself?
Leaning his head back, he gazed at the sky. It is worth it, isn’t it? Life is supposed to be painful but that’s what makes the happy times shine all the brighter. Right?
Arriving in the classroom, Yuki let out a gasp when he saw Aimi standing with Tohru and Uotani. It was like the past few days had been nothing but a dream. There she was, hair shining, smile looking genuine, and clasping Tohru’s hand in her own. She was back to her usual self. Or so it appeared. The only difference were the long, fingerless sleeves she wore from her hands up her arms past her elbows. The thin, black material looked soft and sexy. Only Yuki knew what they were hiding.
Sensei entered right behind him and before he could utter a word in greeting to Aimi, the teacher was rushing over. “I thought you were sick? Wait, those sleeves are not regulation!”
But before she could even finish, Aimi reached right into the front of her shirt and pulled out a folded piece of paper. “I have a note from my doctor. Skin condition.”
While the boys, and some girls, in the classroom went red in the face from watching Aimi pull something from her bra right in front of the class, Sensei read the note and nodded. “The office has a copy?”
“Of course!” Aimi beamed at her and the teacher couldn’t help patting her on the head. It was no secret that she had a soft spot for Aimi. She often found the girl’s crazy antics amusing.
“Alright, then. Glad to see you back with us. Now everyone take your seats!” And with that, the day started as usual. Yuki still couldn’t believe that not only was Aimi here but acting as if nothing had happened. He tried to catch her eye as they prepared for their studies but she wouldn’t look his way. Only an hour later, before a break, did he catch her watching him. Locking eyes with her, he creased his brows in a question. Aimi’s mouth quirked slightly, a tiny smile that might have been meant to reassure him but only appeared sad to him.
At lunch, she moved to take off but not before he touched her arm and whispered in her ear. “Misery loves company, so they say. Talk to me later?”
Surprised, she nodded and gave him a real smile this time. “Of course.”
It was difficult escaping the prying eyes of his fan club but Yuki and Aimi managed to sneak away after school let out. They walked to the tennis courts and sat down in the grass outside the fence. Not wanting to tackle the hard topics immediately, Yuki, cleared his throat and grinned at her. “I think I’m going to try out for student body president.”
Her eyes widened at his words and she clapped. “Really? Oh, that’s great, Yuki! I think you would make a great president.” She paused her bubbling and quieted. “I’m glad to see you coming out of your shell more.”
“It’s hard for me. It scares me, honestly. But that’s why I have to do it. I need to challenge myself. Prove to myself that I’m strong enough to face my fears.” He glanced at her sitting beside him and placed a hand on her shoulder. “What’s so hard for you, Aimi chan?”
He thought she would clam up or at least hesitate to think about it but she answered him immediately. “I like a boy who doesn’t like me. He doesn’t think of me that way. In fact, I’m pretty sure he is in love with someone else.”
Yuki’s face began to turn red and she noticed, throwing her hands up in a defensive position. “Oh no, it’s not you! Don’t worry, I think of you only as a friend. Well, more like a brother, really. You always want to take care of me.” She met his eyes and grew serious. “And I appreciate that. It may not seem like it, but I do.” She faced him, taking both his hands in hers. “Thank you. Really. I know I am weak and overemotional but I want to try again. I have to try. My mother hates me, oh well. The boy I like doesn’t like me, tough. I’m some kind of freaky witch, too bad. I’ll find a reason to keep on. I have to, right?”
“Yes!” Yuki squeezed her hands and for the first time in days, his heart felt lighter. Her eyes said that she meant every word. She still seemed lost and miserable but she was also determined and maybe that was enough for now. It was the best he could hope for, anyway. He stood and pulled her to her feet, careful not to get too close.
“What is that witch business, anyway?” he asked.
“Oh, well, that is a discussion for another time.” She smirked and they gathered their belongings to walk home.
