Yuki sat side by side with Fujimoto san in the hospital lobby. They hadn’t spoken for quite some time but though Yuki was slightly uncomfortable, unsure how to console the man, Aimi’s father seemed to have forgotten the teenager was even there. His face in his hands, his body shaking with his silent tears, the older man was barely keeping his emotions in check.
Yuki wanted to say something but had no idea what was appropriate. He couldn’t promise that Aimi would be all right because at this point they honestly didn’t know. She was still in surgery. What could he say? What could he do?
He sat there, his clothes covered in drying blood, anxious and useless, the constant questions assaulting his brain. Why? Why would Aimi, of all people, try to kill herself? She was always so happy, so cheerful. But Yuki knew that that wasn’t really true. He knew she held a dark side, just as he did. It was one of the reasons why they got along so well. They recognized that black void in each other’s souls.
Still, Aimi had so much going for her. Everyone liked her. She was intelligent. She was musically talented. If she was interested in dating, she could have her choice of the boys at school. She was beautiful. It just didn’t seem right.
“Why indeed? Why do I even bother? A creature like me isn’t meant for this world.”
What had she meant by that?
A doctor approached them and Fujimoto san shot to his feet. The doctor held up a hand before they could assault him with questions. “She came through surgery just fine. She is in recovery, I’ll lead you there.” While they walked through brightly lit corridors, the doctor spoke to Aimi’s father about the details of the surgery but Yuki was too distracted to hear his words. She was alive. She was going to make it. He didn’t realize how tense he was until those words finally washed over his conscience. His friend was going to be okay. Physically, anyway.
When the doctor stopped in front of an open door to a hospital room, Yuki couldn’t help but blurt, “Can I see her?”The doctor frowned at the kid who had interrupted him, “She may have one visitor at a time. We don’t want to overwhelm her.” Yuki stepped slowly inside the room, hovering in the doorway.
His eyes immediately found Aimi’s face. She seemed pale lying there but peaceful. Sleeping. Before he could take another step inside, he heard the doctor say something to her father that chilled him.
“We put restraints on her, this time. We can’t have her making another attempt while she’s here.”
He went on to talk about how long she would be at the hospital but Yuki’s hearing became fuzzy. This time. The doctor said this time. As if she had done this before. Tohru had mentioned her being hospitalized for a while before she moved here. It was like someone kneed him in the stomach as the truth hit him. His eyes quickly went to Aimi’s wrists and the thick bandages going up her arms. There were leather straps holding her arms and torso to the bed.
Yuki couldn’t believe it. This wasn’t her first time trying to kill herself.
Curly eyelashes fluttered as he neared the bed. Aimi opened her eyes slowly as the drugs wore off, looking around blankly for a minute before she was able to focus. Yuki pulled a chair over and sat down beside her. He noticed that her hair still had some blood in it but her face was clean.“Hey, you.”
Once Aimi registered who he was, her eyebrows creased in pain. “Oh, Yuki. I’m so sorry.”
He felt relief that she was apologizing, that she regretted her actions. He let out a breath and began to smile at her until she continued.
“I completely forgot you were coming over. I never wanted you to see that.”
His smile vanished. She didn’t regret her actions. She regretted that he was there to save her. A fury like he had never felt before rose inside him and spilled out through his words. Yuki’s shoulders quaked and tears threatened as he railed at her, keeping his voice low so no one outside the door would hear.
“How dare you! How could you possibly think that this was okay? Do you have any idea what you are doing to your father? He is a complete wreck!”
Aimi looked away. “He’s better off…”
“You didn’t see his face!” Yuki interrupted. Aimi winced but he went on. He couldn’t stop the words that tumbled from his mouth. He wondered if he would regret them later but he just had no control over his emotions. “It was as if he had been shot. Gutted. You aren’t killing just yourself, you idiot, you are killing him!”
“No, I’m giving him a chance!” She exclaimed. Yuki just stared at her so she continued. “I am the reason for all his torment. My mother left him because of me. His wife, the woman he loved, is gone because of me. He can’t get remarried, won’t even try because of me. We have to move all the time and it’s my fault. You don’t know, Yuki. You can’t understand. I make him miserable.”
Slumping back in his chair, Yuki digested what she just said. He had known about some of her past but why was Aimi blaming herself for their problems? How could she be the reason all of these things happened? “He loves you. Whatever you may think, however you think that killing yourself is helping him, you are wrong.”
Aimi said nothing, only stared at the bindings on her arms. She didn’t try to move her limbs to test them. Her body was stilled wracked with pain but she ignored it. Swallowing, she lifted her chin, her eyes finding the ceiling. Then she whispered, barely loud enough for him to hear. “I know he loves me. That’s why I have to release him.”
Anger spent, Yuki leaned forward to touch her shoulder when her father entered. Fujimoto san’s face was stony, as if he were trying to appear strong for her but might burst into tears again any moment. Yuki quickly stood and offered his seat. He knew he had to go, he knew they needed time alone, but before he walked out, he hovered in the doorway.“I’ll see you later?” he asked. His voice held a question but also a threat. She had better not try anything.
Aimi merely nodded and he left.
