She had to be one of the best kept secrets of their small tight knit group, especially if his usually overly snoopy and grudgingly resourceful little brother didn’t even know about her. Goh had obviously gone through pain staking efforts to keep her presence hidden from them all. But even the most meticulous of people were prone to mistakes and it was exactly that small flaw that had allowed him to find her…
He knew Goh was restless, he would could never be cooped up inside for long periods of time and was constantly coming and going from the house at odd hours. Sometimes he even vanished overnight, luckily for him not only was his dear brother was too busy with work and his little girlfriend, but he never got along well with their adopted sibling enough to care what he was doing or where he was unless he was needed. The pattern never changed, but he’d quickly become aware Goh was purposely coming home after he thought everyone was in bed, wearing different clothes and smelling like he’d taken a shower recently. It hadn’t taken him long to decide to follow him and see exactly what he was up too, he simply planted one of his sweet insect pets in Goh’s clothes and had it track his movements. He hadn’t expected the bread crumb trail to end at the feet of a venerable human girl. Admittedly, finding her so easily had taken some of the fun out of discovering her, but he quickly realized he could use this simple woman to his advantage. There would be plenty of time for “fun” later. The girl, like many humans, was a creature of habit; it made the task of memorizing her schedule both easy and difficult. It was easy to follow her set schedule, but difficult to avoid Goh who was constantly present and ever watchful for threats. If she was indeed aware she was in danger by associating herself with a tengu she showed no signs of it. He was well aware of a girl knew what Goh was; he’d seen the fool fly back to the manor more than once while she watched. He knew Goh wouldn’t have obtained the Zenki position by being a naive fool; there was no telling what precautions he’d secretly taken to protect the girl. It hadn’t taken him long to pin point a ring he suspected was Goh’s main point of protection. He’d taken a gamble and experimented with other possible points of protection and quickly discovered the ring was it. Clever and overconfident as any Zenki could be, he’d kept protection simple and covered her scent to keep other demons from getting curious. He leaned back on the hard uncomfortable park bench balancing a book on his leg, he began running through his plan for tonight for the hundredth time. The gamble he was about to take would have a big payoff if it went off without a hitch. He glanced at the girl, once again studying her, he hated to admit he was curious and fascinated by raw human curiosity and emotion, they seemed so simple minded but were capable of unpredictable and amazing things. She was currently playing with two children, a pair of boy and girl twins he’d identified as her niece and nephew. By her usual schedule she always took them out on Friday, one of her shortest days at school, to spend the entire day with them. His eyes studied her face and figure, memorizing her in this moment it would be the last smile he would see from her, he wanted to memorize it to better savor the expression of fear and anger he knew was coming. Putting aside the fact she was human and lacked the inhuman beauty of demons, he supposed by human standards she was pretty, not plain but not a beauty either. She had an oval face, shoulder length silky black hair pulled back into a messy bun at the back of her head. Her almond eyes were wide and youthful and her bow shaped lips were constantly turned up into a smile that appeared to light up her whole face and revealed a hidden dimple in her left cheek. She was short and petite, obviously feminine with a tomboyish touch; he could see why someone was temperamental as Goh would be attracted to someone as bright and bubbly as her. In fact to his chagrin it hadn’t taken him long to realize the girl almost reminded him of an older, more mature and womanly version of Misao. The sun was quickly setting, casting a murky darkness over the city and began to activate overly sensitive street lamps prematurely. He stood up and casually walked away as she gathered her things to drop the children back off with their parents before heading home for the night. Just like every Friday. However unlike most Fridays, her boyfriend was unfortunately tied up in an unforeseen mission and unfortunately was unable to go on their usual date together. He was barely able to suppress a smile as he stood up and casually walked away; finally he would see if his gamble would pay off. *** Masami quickly shut the door to her apartment and turned the locks before kicking off her shoes. She paused at the entrance to her small apartment and touched the ring her boyfriend had given her drawing comfort from it. It was a usual ring, jet black and shined so it almost looked silky, it was shaped like a feather bent in on itself in a circular pattern. They’d been together six months when he’d given it to her for her birthday and made her promise never to take it off before confessing everything. At first she’d thought he was pulling a horrible joke on her, after all demons didn’t exist anymore than fairies but something about his tone had made her listen to his story silently. It wasn’t until he showed her his wings that she really believed him, it had been a tough pill to swallow but she’d accepted it with as much grace as she could muster. She loved him too much to let something like being a crow demon come between them. A flicker of a smile crossed her lips and she softly kissed the ring at the memory, they’d been together for two years as of today and as odd as it sounded she couldn’t imagine being with anyone else human or not. She suddenly felt a pang of regret that he couldn’t be there with her tonight; he’d been called away by his boss for an important mission. It hadn’t taken her long to realize as much as he hated his boss, he obeyed his word as though it were commanded by a god. He’d promised to be back in two days at the most, it was well worth the wait to see his smiling face again and they would celebrate their two years together then. Quickly she decided to take a shower and head to bed shortly after dinner; the faster the days went by the sooner Goh would come home. She had classes in the morning anyway and needed to rest up for a y of lectures and homework. Trudging to the bathroom she stripped her clothes as she went, bunching them into a ball and dropping them in the washing machine as she passed. She loved babysitting for her niece and nephew, but they were exhausting balls of energy. Absently she pulled the ring off and set it on the bathroom sink, a habit she’d developed to keep the ring clean and shiny. In record time she’d bathed and dried her hair. She was standing in the kitchen bouncing from one foot to the other as she boiled water in an electric kettle to make a quick dinner of ramen. As she dumped water into a bowl a knock interrupted her thoughts. “Who is it?” she called as she abandoned her ramen and made her way to the door. “Masami, it’s me!” Her heart nearly jumped into her throat as she rushed to the door, she peered through the small peephole to confirm it. “Goh!” she gasped, scrambling with the locks, she threw the door open and threw her arms around his neck for a hug. “I wasn’t expecting you until Sunday!” He wrapped a thin arm around her in a one armed hug, his other arm hidden behind his back. He rested his chin and part of his cheek on top of her head in his usual protective but gentle gesture of affection. But something...seemed off... “I got back early and couldn’t wait to see you.” he pulled back and smiled, the corners of his green eyes crinkled slightly under his glasses. Any doubt she felt melted away with his sweet serene smile, his earrings clanged together as she pulled him inside by his wrist. Most found him frightening or intimidating with his bright red hair, tattoos and earrings but she’d learned quickly he was as soft as a teddy bear and a complete gentleman. “I’m so happy to see you!” she gushed, nearly forming the sentence into one word in her excitement. Without hesitating she stood on her toes to give him a kiss, startled when he grabbed her by one of her wrists and stepped back out of her reach. He stood at arm’s length smiling sheepishly, “Before we get to that, I have a present for you.” A dozen multicolored tulips appeared from behind his back like magic, he held them out to her a faint blush colored his cheeks as he smiled shyly. “Oh they’re beautiful!” she took them from him, handling them as though the flowers were a fragile infant instead of a plant. “I can’t believe you remembered my favorite flower.” “Well that’s just the tip of the ice berg,” he said with a playful wink. “You might want to get those in water.” She rushed off to the kitchen, balancing the flowers in one arm she filled a vase with water and set it on her kitchen counter near a window. She was placing the flowers in the water when she felt a sharp sting on her arm. “Ouch!” “What happened?” Goh asked gliding into the room after her looking concerned. She held out her arm, “I don’t know, I think something stung me it’s all red—“ Goh crossed the room quickly and studied her bare forearm. “It looks like a spider bite,” he sounded worried as his fingers brushed over a small, painful, quickly swelling lump on her arm. “It must’ve been on the flowers, are you okay?” She forced herself to smile, she hated spiders, “I’m sure I’ll be fine, I’ll put some ice on it and keep an eye—“ Words suddenly failed her as her whole body began to tingle and grow numb like every nerve had been put to sleep all at once, her jaw suddenly felt slackened and her tongue grew heavy in her mouth. Her eye lids felt heavy and her brain sluggish, it took all of her effort to keep her eyes open. Her legs came out from under her and she fell to the floor, her head connected with the floor as she landed painfully on her side, stars danced in her eyes for a moment as she tried to figure out what was going on. Goh approached and crouched down in front of her, an uncharacteristic grin twisted his soft mouth. “That worked a hell of a lot faster than expected, this makes my job easier,” a strange voice emerged from Goh’s twisted lips. “Looks like that bat-shit crazy crow’s gamble paid off after all.” Oh God, she’d forgotten to but the ring back on after bathing! Before her heavy lidded eyes slid shut, Goh’s appearance shifted a young silver haired boy with golden eyes appeared magically in his place. With a heavily sinking heart she realized she’d been tricked by the very creature Goh had repeatedly warned her about and insisted the ring could help weaken or repel. A fox demon. Confusion and horror twisted her heart and questions filled her mind, Crow? He couldn’t mean Goh could he? Why was he doing this to her? Who was this guy and what did he want with her? What was going to happen to her? While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
